Kumbakonam is predominantly called as Temple town. A famous festival called Mahamaham is celebrated once in 12 years. Kumbakonam is located on the banks of the River Cauvery . Sri Abhimugheswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Abhimugheswarar and Goddess Amirthavalli. The festivals celebrated in this temple are Navarathri and Maham. There are also temples like Sri Gowthameswarar Temple, Sri Nageswaran Temple near Kumbakonam. Hence the name Temple city for this Kumbakonam. But the modern Kumbakonam is fully engaged with busy commercial activities. There are many cottage and small scale industries like Chewing Tobacco, Silk rearing, Brass and Cosmetics and Stainless steel.
