Kumbakonam
 
Kumbakonam is located in Thanjavur district. Kumbakonam is called as Temple town, because the city has more number of temples than many other cities. There is one great festivel called Mahamaham which is celebrated for every 12 years, which will be held in Mahamaham tank in Kumbakonam. The town is surrounded by two river Arasalar River and Kaveri River.

    Kumbakonam is predominantly called as Temple town. A famous festival called Mahamaham is celebrated once in 12 years. Kumbakonam is located on the banks of the River Cauvery . So it is a very fertile area. It belongs to Thanjavur district. There are many temples in and around city. Approximately there are sixty temples in the city. Kumbeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Kumbeswara and Goddess Mangalambigai. Next famous temple is the Sri Kasi Vishwanathar Temple, the speciality of this temple is that the nine rivers called as Navakannigas are located in the form of statues and the corridors of this temple have very attractive sculptures. Sri Abhimugheswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Abhimugheswarar and Goddess Amirthavalli. The festivals celebrated in this temple are Navarathri and Maham. There are also temples like Sri Gowthameswarar Temple, Sri Nageswaran Temple near Kumbakonam. Hence the name Temple city for this Kumbakonam. But the modern Kumbakonam is fully engaged with busy commercial activities. There are many cottage and small scale industries like Chewing Tobacco, Silk rearing, Brass and Cosmetics and Stainless steel. There are many good Educational institutions in Kumbakonam which offer quality education.
